What can you do with the medical billing and coding degree or certification? Could you just give us a high level overview of the different types of jobs or different career paths you could go down?

Guest Answer:
It can be quite complex. Some people go for billing and coding like a combine certification. Then they find out that right after they start and get a little experience, they start to learn that it’s really separating billing, being more like an accounting career and coding being more of a technical translation career. So that’s like the next step up, realizing that you need to pick one of those two paths. After you get there, then you’re realizing you could talk about working on the documentation, helping the providers get better documentation. You could work on the computer systems themselves, the accounting systems, the data management systems, the coding systems. You can get more into managing the files and the records. You can get into deeper levels of coding. Specify in one type of specialty of care like neurology, and then say, oh, I’m bored of that. I want to go do obstetrics. You could do that, too. You can work on the insurance company side. You can work on the health care provider side. You can work on the institutional like the hospital side. So there are so many things that you can do that’s just a few.

In the medical billing and coding field. Healers don’t necessarily need to have a degree, nor do they need to have a certification. You can come in with a high school diploma as a medical biller, but coding is a little different. Coding, they generally require some kind of certification, not necessarily a degree. I went to local community college. I was going to be a medical assistant but flipped over into the coding because puzzles love it, you know? So I graduated with that two years of community college. It really depends on what your goals are. I encourage anybody that’s interested in this field really look at what are your personal goals? Do you just want to be in your cubicle and this is what you want to do today? You die or do you want to move up, get into management, or maybe get into some other aspects of health care when you have the basics of health care under your belt and I’m talking about medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, once you have that information, you can go in a lot of different directions.

There are so many options from private clinics to big hospitals, also known as in-house billing. So if you do billing for a hospital or private clinic, you’re their in-house biller. And then there are plenty of third party billing companies where you might service multiple clinics or even multiple hospitals, and then there’s plenty of freelance work. It’s pretty common, but I found it was a lot harder to get into until I had more experience in the field.

So a lot of people, they do the combination, as I do with my company, where they’re doing the medical billing, coding, payment posting, you know, revenue cycle management pretty much. There are people who enjoy just the billing part where they’re working with just the insurance numbers. And there are others who love the Kotlin version where it’s like adding a new code like, you know, you know, access to the client. I want to figure out it’s a lot of research to be able to figure out the diagnosis code that should be connected to a zip code or the CPC code which should be connected to my diagnosis. So vice versa. And so a lot of the it literally intrusions to once a day more anyone with the medical billing, coding certification they can help, are set up because a lot of it is like the coding portion in what’s required. We know what has to happen for like the revenue assistance, what it’s to get the information we need or like the details of a chief complaint, any provider notes that are. So it’s really a lot in very broad of what you can do with a medical billing circumstance. Yahoo

What is something that you love about working in medical billing and coding?

I really like the puzzle aspect of it together, whether it’s just one piece of documentation, you’re trying to pull everything out of that, or you’re looking at a series of documentation on one patient or a series of documentation from one provider. And you start seeing the overarching things and they all start drawing a picture.

I love that it’s like a game. You have the skill to play the game. It’s like a sport. You have a competitor. And if you’re working for health care provider, your competitor is your insurance company and you are playing the game of getting the information and getting the money in the door. There’s a lot of rules to playing the game. There’s a lot of tactics to playing it properly, and it’s very fun when the money comes in the door, even if it isn’t yours. The other thing is the flexibility. So many people want to work remotely. They want to work in a hybrid situation. They want to work in a small business environment, a large corporate environment. There are so many options available.

I absolutely love medical billing and coding because there’s always something new to learn and the flexibility has been a really great perk as well.

I love all of it. I love digging and finding and making sure that, you know, the code the provider uses to break the leakage part. I love the aspect of the people that I work around an hour where everything from our staff, as well as the different providers, the patients. I love being that answer that others are looking for. I love being able to share that information and shine a light on exactly what that it’ll be, that guide to the next step for them. For sure.

I actually like the challenge. You have to really dig in there sometimes and ask yourself, is this the right code, especially for procedures, there is a little bit of a gray area. So it’s important to stay in education, stay getting your continuing education credits. And things to keep you updated on the type of things that you’re coding and the new information coming out about those, the new guidelines and that kind of thing, they’re always changing. So I do like the challenge.

What are the day to day duties of someone working in medical billing and coding?

Medical Biller and Coder Expert Answer:
On average day as a medical biller, you could expect to review and submit charges or medical claims. Post payments from insurance companies and patients, send out patient statements, work on rejections, denials and outstanding air that you may have on the account. You also sometimes have meetings or take phone calls or outstanding claims. You may need to submit corrected claims or appeals to the insurance companies. And in some cases, you may need to submit medical records or paper copies of the claims. That would be just an average day.

Medical Biller and Coder Expert Answer:
There’s 10 steps to the medical billing and coding cycle and those are all kind of different job titles and that’s patient registration, insurance verification, the actual encounter with the doctor, medical transcription, medical coding charge, industry charge, transmission, accounts receivable and then denial management and then payment posting. Most of those are billing kind of jobs except for when you’re looking at coding. So it depends if you’re in patient registration, your front desk, and you are inputting the insurance and getting copies of everything, their I.d., catching up all their medical records, giving them the clipboard and all the paperwork to fill out. That’s kind of that. And then you input all that. Plus you’re going to be doing insurance verification to make sure that visit is going to be covered. If you’re working at a desk, you’re working billing. You know, it depends on the size of the organization. A mom and pop type doctor set up, you know, a couple of physicians. You’re kind of doing that whole process. You may be doing all of it. Whereas if you’re working for big companies like Kaiser, you may be like working strictly workers comp cases.

It depends on the role that the practice gives a company or that practice gives you the role of play in our day. I want you to respond at the cost of the patients. We want you to verify. I’ll be make sure payments are posted. You know, we have 50 clients that we need to have reviewed. It’s really going to be, if not necessarily, what are the coder? Wants to do our work for it, but it’s like the work that’s needed from them because they can be in all aspects of. They can work the front desk if necessary because they’re trained in the system. It’s so much that we can do. But the life of a builder literally can be anything from what they call an insurance all day. If it’s coding the code enforcement, it could be just reviewing visits from the provider, making sure that information is great, or it could be a little bit of everything within that hour.

I’ve worked at a few different places. It’ll depend if you’re one to work in the hospital or for a hospital, or more like an outpatient physician office. At the hospital, you just kind of have the list and you have a certain genre of patients that you’ll be holding and you’ll just sit down and code those off the computer in the office, setting them in right now. There is a lot more to do. I would say we keep up with all the doctors charges from the hospital, like if he was on call over the weekend. We have to talk to his mid-levels. We have to get his consults or surgeries that he did not schedule from his on call weekend. We have to print all that out of the hospital system will even be putting that data on the patients like their Andrea’s birthday insurance in the computer. We kind look at what they did will print out surgeries or consults or agencies and we’ll go from that. Got to scan it back into our own system. It’s a lot.

What jobs are there in medical billing and coding? Are they the types that you could be working from home or doing some type of remote work? And how do the hours and scheduling work overall?

Medical Billing and Coding Expert Answer:
Typically, you can do pretty much whatever you want to do with medical coding in terms of your working hours and that kind of thing. If you want to work in the office, then there will be a set schedule. Currently I work like 6 to 4:30, 4 days a week and then I’ll be off on rotating Friday. I had a job offer recently for remote and the lady told me, you know, you can set your own schedule. We just ask that you stick to a schedule if you need to leave to go to the doctor or anything, just takes us and let us know. And then when you get back, you can just complete the rest of your hours. It can be pretty relaxed or a little strange to if you’re in the office.

A lot of people want to work remote. A lot of companies still have their work house. So there’s both. I have four friends that work hybrid. They stay home three to four days a week and then go into the office one or two days a week. So there’s that too. There’s project work where you work on a billing and coding project for a few months and then you’re finished. Maybe you could do that in-house or remotely. So lots of different and very varied opportunities. I’m seeing that not being place dependent. First I thought, well, you know, a big institution like a hospital network, they would want their people in-house. But that’s not necessarily true. I know a lot of smaller providers like small group practices, not necessarily true.

COVID really changed the whole market on this. Prior to covid, you didn’t see a lot of people working from home. Maybe if you go into a management position, you have to travel between site and site to go to the different clinics. Nowadays, because of covid, there’s a lot more opportunity of working from home. However, working from home brings on its own different special needs. If you don’t have any experience, you’re not going to work from home. You’ve got to have a compliant workspace. Sometimes they give you the equipment to use. Sometimes you have to have your own. You know, there’s a lot of different stuff. And in some places, Yeah. If you got an East Coast client, I live on the West coast, so their day starts at 5. Their Yeah. My time. Sometimes you’re in a meeting at 4:00 AM in the morning. I work internationally too. I have clients in India. I have clients in Pakistan and in the Philippines, and they’re all a day ahead. 3:00 AM for me is 3 PM for them, three, four or 5:00 for that. So that’s the end of their day. That can get very interesting as far as scheduling is concerned. Some people want that strict 40 hours and they got the camera on you and they’re watching. But, you know, some people just go by the quality of your work. And that’s a good thing.

So that really depends on what company you work for, who you work for. So for me, yes, I can work from home. I do work from home both for I had worked for other companies and then for myself. It’s all remote. But I have previously worked for companies who were just in-house. They only wanted you in the office. They didn’t want to do remote. And that that’s because of cybersecurity issues and things like that can play a part in that. And then they may just like the work environment when everyone’s in the office versus, you know, when you’re remote, it’s definitely more separate and not as big of a sense of community.

Even prior to the pandemic, it wasn’t really hard to find a lot of remote jobs or how to use that term only because you doubtless need a lot like you need your coding words or any documentation from a player. So be able to get into the system and you just need access to this. So it’s been a plethora of remote jobs in the health, you know, or a very busy. Just once the pandemic came, a lot of companies realized that we could PIVOT project to remote.

Have you enjoyed your career in medical billing and coding career, and would you recommend it to others who may be considering this career path?

Yeah, I do. It has given me a pretty good life. And if I won lotto, I would still do it. So I guess that kind of answers it, right? I love my job and I love what I do for my company and this career path, and I recommend it all the time to people who just don’t know where to start. I’ve known a lot of people who just did not know what direction in life to go, but they knew they wanted a desk job. They knew they liked paper work, they like the analytical stuff. And I’m like, why are you not doing this? Because is easy to get into. Once you get into it, if that makes sense. So it is something that I recommend to everyone, especially if you’re a young adult and you feel stuck or you just don’t know which direction to go. And you’re looking for something that’s flexible because this offers so much flexibility.

Medical Billing and Coding Expert Answer:
I recommend it to anybody that has an interest in helping other people. And I will tell you the benefits of working in the medical field. When you work for a Kaiser or the local hospital group or anything like that, the benefits can’t be touched if they’re not Union. Usually your benefits begin on the first of the following month when you’re hiring. So you have full medical, dental, vision. I mean, you have a health care savings card. You can’t beat the benefits. And in today’s environment, benefits are very, very important. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve done. I’ve worked through different agencies. I’ve done travel coding where I was sent to Boston when they were switching over ICD-10 codes and was training providers out there for a couple of weeks. I went to Appleton, Wisconsin, but was work for a hospital group out there. Travel coding if you’re young and enhance what I mean. Hey, that’s the way to go.

I absolutely love my career in the medical billing and coding. If anyone is looking for something, they’re not sure. If you are a research type or person, if you love helping people, if you love being that answer, this is definitely the job for you. You can provide the answers to the providers, the patient, the front desk, you know, any staff member. But you also can be that guiding light for that practice where you’re like, oh, I know this, I’ve dealt with this. We can handle it this way. And you answer that question through those patients where they call, they’ve got a question about a deal. You can do all of that and enjoy it. Love every minute.
